The Internet of Things, or IoT, is physical objects fitted with sensors and network connections that collect data and send it over the internet. Instead of a person reading a gauge and writing the number down, the device reports its own state on its own, continuously.
For manufacturers, IoT is where the physical shop floor meets the business software. A sensor can report machine runtime, a scale can capture material weight, a meter can track energy use, and that data can flow straight into an ERP with no manual entry. The payoff is real-time visibility and far fewer transcription errors.
IoT is powerful, but it is worth adopting on purpose rather than on impulse. It earns its keep where automatic, continuous measurement replaces error-prone hand-collection, and it is overkill where a simple manual check would do. Start with the measurements that are both valuable and a pain to capture by hand, and grow from there.
