In precast, quality control is half yard work and half paperwork. The concrete has to be right, and you have to be able to prove it was right, months later, for a piece that is already buried under a road. That proof is the documentation, and on a state job it is not optional.
What the documentation actually is
A precast plant produces a steady stream of records, and the good ones are tied to a specific piece rather than filed in a general binder:
- Batch and mix records. What mix design went into the piece, the batch weights, and the test results that show it hit strength.
- Inspection checklists. Dimensions, cover, reinforcement placement, embeds, and finish, checked against the approved shop drawing.
- Material certifications. Mill certs for steel, and certifications for cement, aggregate, and admixtures.
- Non-conformance reports. When something is out of tolerance, an NCR records what happened, how it was dispositioned, and who signed off.
The point is traceability. If a question comes up on a piece, you should be able to pull its whole story: the mix, the inspections, and the people who checked it.
Hold points gate production
Not every inspection is after the fact. The important ones are hold points, where production stops until someone signs off. The classic hold point is pre-pour, once the rebar cage and embeds are set. Once you close the mold and pour, a mistake in the reinforcement is buried for good. A hold point catches it while it is still a five-minute fix.
A good system lets you run these as hard gates, where the next step is blocked until the inspection passes, or as advisory, where the crew is warned but can proceed. Which one you use depends on the plant and the job.
What a DOT job adds
State DOT work raises the bar, and the specifics vary by state, so always check the one you are shipping to. That said, DOT precast commonly requires:
- A certified plant. Often NPCA or PCI certification, or a state-run program.
- Approved products. Structures drawn from the state's approved products list, made to approved shop drawings.
- A written QC plan. A documented quality-control plan the plant actually follows, not a binder on a shelf.
- Records that travel. Inspection and material documentation that ships with the load so the receiving inspector can verify the piece against its paperwork.
VDOT, for example, publishes its own precast and quality-control provisions, and other states publish theirs. The common thread is that the paperwork has to match the piece, every time.
The binder problem
The failure mode is not usually bad concrete. It is good concrete with paperwork nobody can find. When the QC record lives in a separate binder from the piece, the load ships and the documentation gets reconstructed later, or worse, does not match. Tie the record to the piece and that whole class of problem goes away.
Keeping it attached to the piece
This is why a precast-first system attaches QC to the piece record instead of a parallel filing system.
