A precast label looks like a small thing. It is the difference between a yard where every piece knows what it is and a yard where finding the right piece for tomorrow's load means walking the rows with a tape and a set of prints.
Why the label matters
A piece gets cast, stripped, finished, stored, loaded, hauled, and set, and it passes through a lot of hands along the way. The label is how all of those hands refer to the same piece. It carries the piece mark that ties the physical piece back to its shop drawing and its spot in the structure. Without it, identity lives in someone's memory, and memory ships the wrong piece.
What belongs on it
A good precast label carries:
- Piece mark. The unique identifier for this exact piece. This is the most important field on the label.
- Job or project. So a piece never gets loaded onto the wrong job's truck.
- What the piece is. A short description or product, so a person can confirm the label matches the piece in front of them.
- Cast date. For age and strength tracking, and for first-in-first-out in the yard.
- Weight. So the crew and the crane operator know what they are picking. This is a safety field, not a nicety.
- Lift points and orientation. Where to rig it and which way is up, so it is picked and set correctly.
- A QR code or barcode. The link back to the full record.
- Special handling notes. Anything that is not obvious: fragile edges, a finished face to protect, a specific set sequence.
The QR code earns its place
The printed fields are for the person standing in front of the piece. The QR code is for the system. Scan it at load-out and it can confirm the piece against the load, check that its QC is signed off, and mark it shipped, all without reading a number off a label that has been sitting in the weather. That is what turns delivery verification from a clipboard exercise into a scan.
Label early, label once
The piece that sits unlabeled after stripping is the piece someone has to identify by eye three weeks later, in a full yard, under time pressure to load a truck. Label at stripping, while the piece is still obviously what the paperwork says it is.
How it ties back
The reason a label can be short is that it points at something bigger. In a precast-first system, the piece mark and QR code resolve to the piece record: the shop drawing, the QC checklist, the weight, and where it belongs on the load and in the structure.
