Ask anyone who has run a precast plant what controls the schedule, and they will not say the mixer or the molds. They will say the shop drawings. Casting is fast. Getting the drawing approved is where jobs live or die.
What a shop drawing actually is
A shop drawing is the detailed, plant-specific drawing of a precast piece. The structural drawings from the engineer say what the finished structure has to do. The shop drawing says exactly how your plant will build the piece to make that happen: every dimension, the reinforcement, the embeds and lifting hardware, the blockouts for pipe and conduit, and the elevations the piece has to hit in the field.
It is a translation. The engineer designed intent. The shop drawing turns that intent into something a crew can cast, down to the eighth of an inch.
How approval works
A shop drawing does not go straight to the floor. It goes out for approval as part of a submittal, the package that carries the drawings along with product data and calculations. The design team reviews it, marks it up, and sends it back. The plant revises and resubmits. That loop repeats until the engineer of record stamps it approved.
Only then can the piece be cast. A drawing marked "revise and resubmit" is a job that has not started yet, no matter how much yard space is open.
Why approval is the bottleneck
Here is the part that surprises people outside the industry. The slow step is not making the piece. A plant can cast, strip, and finish a structure in days. The slow step is the paperwork loop before any of that can begin.
Every revision is another trip to the design team and back. Miss a rim elevation or an invert, and the whole submittal comes back. Lose track of which revision is current, and the floor casts to the wrong one. When a plant is behind, it is almost never behind on pouring. It is behind on approvals.
The revision that never comes back
The most expensive thing in a precast office is a shop drawing that went out for approval and disappeared into an email thread. Three weeks later nobody can say which revision is current or who has it, and the job has quietly stalled with no one watching it.
Why the approved drawing should be the record
If approval controls the schedule, then the approved shop drawing is the most important record in the whole job. Everything downstream depends on it: the production schedule, the QC checklist, the piece label, the bill of materials, and the invoice all describe the same piece that drawing defines.
