Virginia's precast concrete drainage work on state projects is governed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The requirements for drainage structures, reinforced concrete pipe, box culverts, and the concrete itself live in the Road and Bridge Specifications, 2020, with details carried on the state's standard drawings. Precast producers read those documents alongside the project plan set to know what to make and how it will be accepted.
On VDOT plan sets, drainage structures are presented in a tabular Drainage Summary sheet. Each structure is listed by a standard designation, such as a DI, MH, or JB number from the Section 100 standards, with its station, structure height from invert to top of concrete, and connecting pipe sizes, types, and inverts. VDOT distinguishes a standard detailed summary from a streamlined summary used on minimum-plan and no-plan projects.
Road and Bridge Specifications, 2020. The sections below cover precast drainage structures, pipe, culverts, and concrete.
| Section | Title |
|---|---|
| 217 | Hydraulic Cement Concrete |
| 223 | Steel Reinforcement |
| 232 | Pipe and Pipe Arches |
| 237 | Structure Bedding Material and Bearing Pads |
| 302 | Drainage Structures |
| 404 | Hydraulic Cement Concrete Operations |
| 405 | Prestressed Concrete |
| 406 | Reinforcing Steel |
Section numbers are a reference. Confirm them against the current specification and any special provisions for your project.
Section 100 (Drainage) carries the drainage structure sheets: drop inlets (DI), manholes (MH), junction boxes (JB), and endwalls (EW, with PC-suffixed precast variants), plus stormwater management sheets. Section 1000 (Box Culverts) covers box culvert and wing wall details, with box culvert sizes referenced to the BC-1 standard.
The Materials Division page links to the Approved Lists compilation and a New Product Evaluation process. Precast-relevant categories include an approved producers list for the Precast Concrete Quality Assurance Program and separate acceptance lists for concrete and metal pipe. Specific list numbers were not text-verifiable in the scanned Approved Lists document.

DhyanaERP reads VDOT drainage summaries today.
DhyanaERP Drainage Summary Import reads a plan set, finds the drainage structure sheets, transcribes them under a strict extraction contract, checks the engineering, and turns each row a person confirms into a priced structure. This status describes DhyanaERP's reading capability only. It is not a statement of DOT approval.
See DhyanaERP Precast EditionIn the 2020 Road and Bridge Specifications, Section 232 (Pipe and Pipe Arches) covers pipe materials including reinforced concrete pipe, and Section 302 (Drainage Structures) covers installation of inlets, manholes, endwalls, box culverts, and precast drainage units. A subsection within Section 302 specifically addresses precast drainage structures and their acceptance.
Precast units other than concrete pipe and prestressed items are accepted under the VDOT Precast Concrete Quality Assurance Program administered by the Materials Division. The producer must appear on VDOT's approved list, maintain an approved quality plan, and staff a VDOT-certified precast technician. VDOT may conduct random plant inspections and independent assurance sampling.
The 2016 Road and Bridge Standards, Section 100 (Drainage), carry the sheets for drop inlets (DI), manholes (MH), junction boxes (JB), and endwalls (EW, with precast PC variants). Box culvert details are in Section 1000, and box culvert sizes are referenced to the BC-1 standard.
Section 302 points standard precast drainage units to the material requirements of AASHTO M 199. Private standards such as this are cited by designation only; consult the AASHTO document for its content. Reinforced concrete pipe references separate ASTM standards called out in Section 232.
